Legislative Update: Strong Economy Means Schools Are Paid Back

Dear Neighbors and Friends,

As you may have heard, the recent economic forecast by the Minnesota Management and Budget Office projected a $1 billion budget surplus. That means our schools are paid back in full after years of borrowing under previous legislatures. To find out more about the details, you can read a Letter to the Editor that Rep. Laurie Halverson and I recently wrote.

In it, we mention the work we're doing as part of the Small Business Caucus to ensure our economy continues to do well and bring in revenue for our schools and public projects like roads and public safety. Just this week the Small Business Caucus met again to discuss various bills we'd like to put forward during the upcoming legislative session that starts in February of 2014. The budget surplus means we'll be in a great position to do some good things come February.

I also wanted to let you know about a transportation town hall meeting happening on December 17 at the Burnsville High School. I'll be there to hear Transportation Commissioner Charlie Zelle and Met Council Chair Sue Haigh discuss transportation issues and I hope you can swing by and put in your two cents. More information on that event can be found by clicking here.

Until then, I hope you all have a great holiday season. It's always a good time to spend time with family and friends. And this good economic news should help keep spirits extra bright this holiday season!
